Go with the trend and keep it metallic in your bedroom this year. There are some breathtaking pieces of furniture and furnishings currently on the market which are a simple must-have for your bedroom in your new home. The beauty of the metallic theme is that it can be used in conjunction with the nostalgic and vintage theme of 2012 or with the more highly lacquered and polished contemporary theme also in trend.

Starting with the nostalgic trend using metallic, the use of metallic grey bed throws available at Next (www.next.co.uk) are a must, combined with a soft shade of heather or purple mohair blanket. Lacing is also key and can be used in the form of a metallic haberdashery lace which can be attached as trims to your blinds or lampshades.

There are some stunning examples of metallic furniture at Homes Direct 365 (homesdirect365.co.uk). Take a look at their range of Baroque-style furniture mixed with some contemporary pieces too. If you love the ideas from this company, but don't have the budget, why not purchase some spray paint from your local Hobbycraft or B&Q? Their ranges of spray paints cater for silver, bronze, gold and crackle metallic. Next, find an item of furniture that you would like to re-cycle. If you don't have one already, take a browse in your local charity shop or visit a boot fair on a Sunday morning. Sometimes, there are gems to snap up if you go early enough.

With the money that you will be saving by creating your own pieces of stylish furniture, a must-have for wallcoverings this year is available from Wallpaper Direct (wallpaperdirect.co.uk) and is called Candelabra, from Eijffinger (see photo). Although it is priced at £127.16 per roll, this wallpaper is stunning, with its reflective silver metallic effect with glistening water drops surrounded by suspended candelabras.

For the perfect bachelor bedroom, keep to the up-to-date theme of earth colours of warm orange and green mixed with greys, anthracite and a metallic mix. Keep the bedding is simple, perhaps with a contemporary stripe. Rugs and wall art should be kept simple also but in line with the colour theme and earthy trend. The earthy trend suggests subjects from nature such as trees, animals, sunsets, sunrises - which also incorporate greens and oranges, to help you with locating suitably themed wall art. Also, take a look at the Moroccan influence in relation to rich colours of green, orange, yellow and others.
