Water in the basement is one of the biggest headaches a homeowner has to deal with. Basement flooding can lead to thousands of dollars in damage, not to mention the time it takes to clean everything up and try to replace valuables, etc. Because of the increase in heavy rainstorms and even hurricanes in recent years, many people are considering hiring a basement waterproofing contractor to keep their home dry.

While it is true that a dry basement that is protected from future storms is the primary reason to waterproof your lower level, there are some other benefits that you may not be aware of:

1. Helps maintain your house's structure

Structural health is critical for the long term maintenance of your home. Cracks in your foundation can eventually cause serious damage to the entire foundation of the home. One of the steps the contractor will take when they waterproof your basement is to seal any cracks you may have in your foundation, thus preventing any long-term damage to the structure.

2. Keeps your belongings protected

Many people like to use their lower level for a storage area. If it is big enough, it may also be used for other purposes as well, like a home office for example. Some of the things stored in the basement are irreplaceable, like family heirlooms that may have been passed down from one generation to the next. When your basement is waterproofed, your important valuables are protected.

3. Prevents mold growth

Mold and mildew can pop up quickly and unexpectedly, and this happens in frequently moist areas like your lower level. When you develop a mold problem, it puts the health of the entire family in jeopardy. Furthermore, you will need to call in a mold remediation team to get rid of it. With proper basement sealing done by a basement waterproofing professional, your mold growth problem will be prevented before it even occurs.

4. Makes your lower level more functional

When a lower level is continually moist, people are hesitant about using it for any special purpose like an extra entertainment room or a home office. The main reason for this is people are generally uncomfortable spending lots of time in a wet basement. When your basement is waterproofed, it's much more functional. You can convert it into virtually any kind of room you want-an extra bedroom, living room, exercise room, whatever.

5. Increases the value of your home

This is the biggie. Even if your basement waterproofing project did nothing to prevent future water problems or make spending time downstairs more comfortable, just the fact that it will increase the appeal of your home to a prospective buyer in the future can make the investment in waterproofing your lower level worthwhile.
