Basically, a criminal lawyer is charged with defending a company or a person charged in a criminal case. When you have a criminal case, it is very important to find a good lawyer. Not only will they represent you well, they will give you advice, prove your innocence and potentially win you a case. You want legal representation that will not sale you out or waste your money. A good attorney will easily cut you a good deal in the event that you are to settle. In some countries, a criminal attorney appointed by the state government or county government is called a public defender.

Start your search as soon as possible. You need not wait to start vetting; just start looking for an attorney the minute the case is filed. Choosing a lawyer within a short time frame can easily cause you a case.

Always look for recommendations from friends and colleagues. If you can find someone who has been in a similar situation to the one you are in at the moment, they can recommend you a good attorney. The person recommending you an attorney should have your best interest at heart.

You can even get recommendation form an attorney from say the justice department or even a clerk or any person involved in legal matters. Some of these people know the ins and outs in matters law and will most probably recommend you competent people. What you want is to have a few recommendations from different people after which you will do your interview to choose the best.

Work with the State bar association. The state bar association is a legal referral service that will recommend to you lawyers from any field that interests you. Basically, what they do is they review your case and match it with a good attorney.

Shortlist a few lawyers who you can potentially hire. Once you have a few recommendations here and there, you can choose from them. Ideally, consideration such as number of cases won, how you relate to them and their experience will help you choose your criminal lawyer.

Always ask a lawyer if they have handled a similar case to yours. This will give you a glimpse of how they will most likely handle your case. Basically, you want to work with someone who has worked on a similar case and can weigh if you have a chance. It is very important that you establish a strong rapport with your lawyers as you will be giving them very person information.

Review the cost of doing business. You do not want to start dealing with payment issues midway through your case. Also, if you have a dispute on payment with your attorney as the case proceeds, he or she will lack in terms of motivation. Sometimes, if you are low on funds working with a pro bono or unpaid attorney is the best option that is if you can find one.

Here you will agree with your criminal lawyers how you are going to pay and when. Therefore, before signing any contract with attorney, have these matters ironed out. Some criminal lawyers like to be paid upfront or on an hourly basis.
