Picket fences are one of the most popular types homeowners install. They are made with individual slats that have gaps between the pickets and are a couple of inches apart and prevent the fence from blocking the view while looking the same from either side. This is why they are often referred to as neighbor friendly fences. Not only do they look good but are great for defining your property and offering security for pets and children without obstructing your view.

How Vinyl is Made

Many are opting for vinyl picket fence over the traditional wood fencing. Vinyl, sometimes referred to as PVC, is made from harmless material that is recyclable. They are made using two processes; mono-extrusion and co-extrusion. Mono-extruded fences contain twelve parts titanium oxide and other ingredients while co-extruded contains titanium oxide in the outer level. Co-extruded PVC fence often tend to show scratches when peeled because the layer underneath is a different color. The strongest and most durable vinyl manufactured is mono-extruded. When scratched it does not show a different color since all ingredients are mixed together and not in separate layers. Many manufactures include Titanium Dioxide which has ultraviolet inhibitors to keep the PVC white and prevents yellowing. Before purchasing a PVC product it’s a good idea to discuss with the manufacturer the type of process that was used and to verify Titanium Dioxide was used in the process.

Benefits of Vinyl

Vinyl picket fences are known for having a long life span along with strength and flexibility. Unlike wood you will never have to worry about discoloring, warping or peeling over time. They will also be able to handle heavy storms and other environmental issues. Unlike wood vinyl do not need to be stained or painted. Vinyl will look good far longer than wood with little to no maintenance involved. Normally you will only need to wash your fence periodically using mild soap and water. Even though vinyl is more costly upfront the overall is far more cost effective.

Options to Suit All Tastes

Vinyl picket fences come in a variety of styles and colors that will add charm and elegance to your property. Not only do they come in the classic white color but a number of colors also depending on each individual manufacturer. The styles normally range from straight, square, scalloped, pointed and the most popular ‘dog ear’.
